Grade 9 Poetry Practise for PE and exam in January:


11 Writing: All assigments must be submitted before Christmas break. Assignment for this week: Summative evaluation for the letter. Write a letter to the Registrar of ABC University, accepting their offer to take (the degree/program) of you choice. Include in the letter a cheque for $200, which will be applied to your file as your acceptance fee. Also, request the URL for registering courses on-line. Also, request what the dates will be for paying tuition throughout the year. Also request information on scholarships offered to first year students at ABC.

12 English: All assignments must be submitted before Christmas break. Who Am I is due today, Dec 15th. In class, we shall finish Shelley Monday, and Keats by Wednesday. All oral presentations must be done by Friday. When we come back after Christmas break, we shall be moving on to the Victorian Period. Test for marks on Literary Periods by Thursday.

9/10 English: Novel assigment due by Dec 18th. This assignment must be in before Christmas break. This week working on Poetry Anthology in class. Anthology will be due upon returning to class in January.

Grade 9/10 English:
Students are working on building an anthology of their favorite poems, from a range of literary periods. Sheets have been passed out for whose poems must be included in the anthology.
As well, students should be working on their novel studies:
For Grade 10: The novel study is again an essay on how the theme of the novel is developed. What is the lesson to be learned (first identify the theme) or the discussion the author wants to create developed by the action (plot) of the story, by how the characters change, or by the setting and how the characters interact with the setting.
For grade 9: A book report: 2 pages on the plot: a retelling of the story; 1 page on the main character of the novel--this part is what is the character like as a person, the personality. 1/2 page on setting: Time, place and atmosphere. 1/2 page on the theme of the novel. 1/2 page on whether you liked the novel, and would you recommend it to others.
Past due: two poems: Grand Manan poem and teenager poem; short story

12-2 English:
The major assignment for this term is the "Who Am I" essay. Sheets are available to guide students through this assignment. This is a review of the student's strengths and weaknesses, before setting some life goals with a plan of how each will achieve the goals.
Each student is to participate in an oral presentation of presenting a romantic poem to the class. This assignment should include a review of the poem, asking questions of the class about poetic tools used to create the poem, and a discussion of the theme of the poem. As well, some information about the poet should be included.

9 English:
Students are working on the program Fast ForWord, to enhance Reading Comprehension. In class, we are also working on the steps of how to write an essay, in preparation for the Provincial exam.

Essay on the value of truth.
New assignment: This is a summative evaluation--no rewrite. Write an essay (500 plus words) on the most important lesson you have learned outside of the classroom OR What are the most important lessons you will take with you from having gone to GMCS. Describe what the lesson(s) was/were, the circumstances under which you learned the lesson(s), who taught you the lesson(s), and the value of the lesson(s). Would you teach this/these lesson(s) to others? This assignment will be evaluated: 50 % for content--by the introductory paragraph, the body and the conclusion. 50 % for writing skills: Paragraph and Sentence Construction: 20 %, Capitalization 5 %, Grammar 5 % (one/half mark lost for each type of error), Punctution 5% (one/hallf mark lost for each type of error)
